Integrated Stratigraphic framework for the Jurassic: Triassic of the Mandal High

Recent discoveries and potential in the Upper Jurassic to Triassic sequences in the area around the Mandal High in both the Norwegian and Danish sectors has intensified exploration and the need for refined stratigraphic and provenance model for improved play fairway mapping.

Increased drilling activity around the Mandal High, penetrating a variety of Jurassic reservoirs has stimulated a drive to better understand the stratigraphy and geology of the area across the border between Norway and Denmark. Exploration is focused on Upper Jurassic succession, but also the potential of older Triassic sections as sources and reservoirs.

Future Geoscience (a joint venture of PetroStrat Ltd and Hafren Ltd) propose a unique stratigraphic solution which can establish correlations between continental and marine facies based on the integration of quantitative biostratigraphy, chemostratigraphy and C-O isotope stratigraphy combined with E-log data analysis.

In 2019, Future Geoscience will undertake a  multi-disciplinary stratigraphic study on up to 20 wells (selected from the list below) located near to and around the Mandal High area. The workflow will include quantitative biostratigraphy (including micropalaeontology and palynology) to provide a comprehensive stratigraphic solution in both shallow and HPHT sections. Furthermore, chemostratigraphy and C-isotope stratigraphic data will be acquired to provide independent stratigraphic and chronostratigraphic control. This data will also provide clients with an assessment of changes in sediment provenance and depositional facies, water depth and source rock potential, as well as potential understanding of reservoir quality controls and distribution.

This stratigraphic framework will be used to constrain subsequent high resolution forensic provenance investigations using zircon U/Pb dating and RAMAN heavy mineral analysis.
